Trim is what makes a room look built rather than assembled, and it is the detail the eye reads before it reads anything else. This collection is MDF from Advantage Moulding and AFD, organized into four working categories: baseboard, crown moulding, door and window casing, and shiplap. Moldings

Baseboard, from shoe to eleven inches

The baseboard range spans quarter round and shoe base at under an inch, through the common three to six inch heights, up to S4S square edge profiles at seven and eleven inches for rooms with the ceiling to carry them. Profiles include Solana, Del Mar, Newport, Coronado, Belmont, Las Vegas, Vintage, Monterey and clean bullnose and round edge options.

Crown moulding for the line at the top

Crown runs from a modest three inch Georgian up to eight and a half inch Empire, with Colonial, Contemporary, Craftsman, Charleson, Venetian and Double Bead Corolina profiles between them. Matching the crown height to the ceiling is the whole exercise, and having one profile family available in several heights lets you keep a single language across rooms of different scale.

Door and window casing that ties it together

Casing widths run from a slim one and five eighths bevel through the standard two and a half and three and a quarter inch profiles, in Lancaster, Howe, Malibu, Intrada, Newport, Belmont, Victorian, Ogee, Boston, Colonial, round edge and notched kerfed patterns. Casing is what visually connects the baseboard to the crown, so it is worth choosing in the same sitting.

Shiplap for walls and ceilings

Shiplap is offered in six and eight inch MDF boards with the rabbeted edge that gives the finished wall its even reveal. Run horizontally it widens a room, run vertically it lifts a ceiling, and applied overhead it turns a plain ceiling into the most interesting plane in the house. It is the simplest way to give a room texture without asking anything of the structure behind it.

Trim frames every wall, door and window you will look at for the next twenty years, which is why it repays a little attention at the specification stage. Choose the baseboard, casing and crown together so the room reads as one thought.
